Melbourne's Mattie Lloyd, with the Australian champion green & gold bands on his collar & cuffs, worked in a break of two, for most of the day. On the ultimate climb he gained a few seconds on his breakaway companion, and soloed home for the final 12k. A terrific reward for one of the sport's tireless domestiques.

Cuisine report: Around the corner from our accomm we found a 24hr outlet, for milk, in bulk. It looks like a slot machine where you'd buy a kit-kat. You can bring your own bottle, or buy one for 20c, and fill it up, with one litre, for one euro. Unpasteurised. Taken from the cow at 5.30 and available here at 7.30. There is a sign instructing all purchasers to boil the milk before consuming. In Italy? Yeah, right... I'm not a milk lover, I just like a little to ‘machiato' my espresso but MBW is, and she thinks it's wonderful.

The Bike Race
Three stages kick start the race in Holland, before they transfer to Savigliano in Italy's north west Piedmonte region. From here the race heads further south, through Tuscany, across to Abruzzo before returning to the Dolomites in the north-east and the event's Grand Finale in Verona. 198 riders (14 from Australia) complete 21 stages over 3 weeks, visiting 2 countries en route, with just 2 rest days. 3,416 kilomtres, running May 8 - 30.
