Giro d'Italia, May 8 - 30, 2010, Report opening prologue
May 8, Amsterdam, 8k, Individual Time Trial
Results 1 Bradley Wiggins (GBr) Sky Professional Cycling Team 0:10:18
2 Brent Bookwalter (USA) BMC Racing Team 0:00:02
3 Cadel Evans (Aus) BMC Racing Team
General classification as above
Hats off to Bradley Wiggins of Team Sky, who took the new team's first Grand Tour stage victory at the first opportunity (and yes, he's half Australian, so we'll claim it too)....(for the moment).
Skippy report: With 14 Aussies racing, it's hard to know where to start. With Cadel in 3rd and Richie Porte in 6th we couldn't have done much better.
Cuisine report: Last night, in Baulne en Brie (Picardie, champagne region ) we had a very local meal. After the aperitif of champagne (what else?), there were four courses, of which I would love to imagine the food miles would not have surpassed one kilometer per plate. It's impossible of course, as even though the champagne was made by the restauranteurs ‘grand-père', the vineyard is still 15k away. So the pre-dinner drink blew it all away immediately. It's a nice thought though, isn't it?

The Bike Race:
Three stages kick start the race in Holland, before they transfer to Savigliano in Italy's north west Piedmonte region. From here the race heads further south, through Tuscany, across to Abruzzo before returning to the Dolomites in the north-east and the event's Grand Finale in Verona. 198 riders (14 from Australia) complete 21 stages over 3 weeks, visiting 3 countries en route, with just 2 rest days. 3,416 kilometres, running May 8 - 30.
